Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born in Lagos on July 11, 1995, to a Nigerian mother and a British father. Her father abandoned her mother when she was five years old, and she was raised solely by her mother. She attended Dowen College in Lekki after completing her primary school education in Lagos. She later relocated to Johannesburg to pursue her studies in Economics at a South African university. Tems was raised in a modest family and discovered her musical talent after joining a local choir. During her childhood, she took the first steps toward becoming a great musician, recording songs with her school choir and practicing on her brother's guitar.

She recalled how, when she doubted her talent, her music teacher urged her to sing with her natural voice, according to a documentary produced by MU Narratives.

Tems will be 26 years old in 2021. She is not married and has kept her dating status a secret. She's probably quite adept at keeping it out of the press.
